About the Program
This path allows the integration of diverse disciplines from top tier graduate programs at the University of Michigan to balance rigorous coursework, trend-setting research, and practice. Our graduate programs are grounded in the belief that both human connection and individuality matter. Each cohort comprises approximately a dozen students for a total of less than 50 master’s students in the School of Design each academic year, enabling all faculty, students, and staff to get to know each other well.

Ensuring students fully understand the design process is a core aspect of the Masters Design Lab programs. Mentoring, feedback sessions, and a holistic approach to design equips our graduates with not only the fundamental skills of a graphic designer, but an understanding of how they function in the bigger picture. The Division of Integrative Systems + Design, and especially the Design Science Program, gave me the opportunity to develop expertise that places my work at the forefront of systems research and practice. I learned theories and methods from disciplines throughout the university, culminating in diverse projects across industry and academia alike. Together, these backgrounds prepared me to contribute valuable perspectives and skills to one of the leading complex systems research centers in the world.

Design for low-resource settings is a unique and important discipline using rigorous methods to meet related needs. The ISD Design Science program is a unique interdisciplinary approach requiring students to integrate two or more traditional disciplines to tackle modern, complex design problems. It’s broader than products, experiences, and systems.It includes the technologies and data that power the above, and the implications and consequences of all of our work in the world in the short and long term. Artists and designers from across the U.S. and around the world come to study at the USC Roski School—a unique environment for creativity, experimentation and collaboration in the heart of Los Angeles. Therefore, we continually strive to develop and integrate the study of emerging tools and practices into our graduate curricula. Several of our courses explore user-experience, user-interface, augmented reality, virtual reality, extended reality, embodied interfaces, and conversational design as a means of developing forward-thinking design concepts.
